Will & Matt make a flat pack shelving unit

The other day I had the pleasure of helping my flat mate, Will, put together his flat pack shelf which had been in his room since September. I decided to document our progress because in simple terms, we’re a bit crap at flat-pack stuff. Actually, Will is bit crap with flat pack stuff. He can’t follow instructions properly, he can’t screw, but he does everything with such wonderful energy and charisma that you can’t help but feel he knows what he’s doing!

The box of goodies

The box of goodies

So here we see the box of goodies, slightly dishevelled in our excitement, but fear not, we lost no parts!! Infact for some reason we had a few spare, so expect photo’s of a collapsed shelf in the near future!

So stage 1, build the frame.

Will begins inserting the wooden knobs into the outer frame. Unfortunately, Will sticks together the wrong bits of wood in stage one, but Matt is too slow to catch his shameful schoolboy error.

Following Will’s cock-up, we finally complete stage one, the frame. (Note the wooden spoon on the floor. A very useful alternative to a mallet)

So with stage one complete we can now attach the back to the unit. This requires screwing and provides me and Will with the perfect opportunity to test out those tiny screwdrivers I won in a christmas cracker. In what could be considered as a scary coincidence, Will also produces a set of screw drivers that he won from a christmas cracker! It’s as if it were destiny! (I should point out that me and Will are not gay nor in any kind of dodgy relationship together, we just happen to have the same screwdrivers, though mine look slightly better!)

Quality Hardware

Quality Hardware

As you can see, they are an incredible present to receive along with the customary joke and paper hat. Unfortunately, Will has a lot of trouble screwing with his. He blames it on greasy palms and wraps a tea towel around his hands in an effort to reduce the slip-tion (new word!!) he is experiencing. I pity him, it doesn’t help and I end up screwing everything!

Finally, after about an hour and 16 screws later (i think that averages to a screw every 4 minutes), we have the beautifully finished back panel! Once again the wooden spoon makes an appearance in the above photo.

The last stage is for Will (and his hairy arms) to attach the roof to the unit which I think he did brilliantly and without any help from the wooden spoon! Now that it’s finished, all that was left was to put in the shelves and stock it with CD’s and DVD’s!!

And here we have the finished masterpiece! Beautiful flat-pack-craftmanship!!!

Second Challenge Complete

Well, I’ve just got back from London having completed another of my challenges with the aid of Amy (cheers chuck!!). I feel pretty pleased that I’ve actually done two of them now! It doesn’t feel like some pointless wishlist that I came up with in a moment of boredom, but it has become meaningful list of life-fulling challenges (yeah, whatever!).

Anyway, as I said, I need to prove I’ve done the challenge, so here is the proof! Me eating Sushi!!! (which is actually really really nice!!)

Here is the hallowed tray! £6.50′s worth of Sushi.

The blessed Amy who helped me complete my chllenge eating sushi whilst scratching her chin. (we also kinda broke the law later on, by smuggling me in to her Uni-trespassing, but her and her friend are gonna find a random law for me to break. They’re both studying law, so they know lots of random laws)

Here’s how to eat sushi with your eyes shut. A talent worth having.

Note to self

When someone offer’s you the opportunity to complete something off your list of challenges for this year, do not, I repeat DO NOT say no! (What a muppet :( )

The Goldspinks Going Up in the World!

Look, I know we’ve all done it. Whether in a moment of pure boredom or simly as curiosity, we’ve all put our names into google to see what comes. I’ve done it several times (mainly to see if my website was at the top of google – it is now!) I also did it a while ago on my blog and discovered i was featured on several porn sites (see here). Anyway, I thought I’d try and find out whether there are any interesting Goldspinks in the world (apart from myself). I only know of a few relatives called Goldspink, we’re a pretty rare bunch, but some of us have been making a name for ourselves!!! Here’s a little look at the Goldspink’s that have gone somewhere in the world!

  • First up is Calvin Goldspink – former member of that rockin pop kiddy fest better known as S-Club 8. Turns out he’s launching a solo project soon. I don’t know where we’re joined on the family tree, but he must be some sort of relative
  • Next up on the celeb list is Sebastian Goldspink who may be familiar to the few of you cool enough to have watched Heartbreak High when it was on. He’s been in a TV series in 2004
  • according to imdb.com but thats about it

  • Let’s move towards politics and our lesser known Communist Canadian relative Frank Goldspink. Seems he ran for the leadership but only got 25 votes (obviously not too popular then!)
  • Our next political related entry is Councillor Stephen Goldspink from Peterborough! It’s quite weird how a year or so ago Peterborough meant nothing to me, but now I know Hannah there and Will was there all last year, and now Councillor Goldspink’s there until 2008!
  • Wahey, my first blood relative! My uncle Rob. He’s a very successful lawyer & a really a nice guy! There was random moment in the summer when Amandine said she’d read a law paper by a Goldspink and I figured out it was him!
  • Next up Professor Geoffrey Goldspink who has contributed to a very interesting article on msn on “The Zero-Minute Workout – Cheat your way to a great body!”
  • Finally, we’ll finish with (in my opinion) the greatest Goldspink! So far he has featured in several major stage productions (including Shakespeare’s Tempest), he has also won several awards for contributions to the world. It is of course me! I haven’t really done much for the world, except graced it’s front cover. But I’ll keep you all posted when i move up

I’m not tired anymore

Well I’m finally awake after an extremely busy week. I was on one of courses last week, Interactive System Design. It was a week long intensive course, and by intensive I mean “INTENSIVE”. It started at 10am Sunday morning and finished at 7pm that day, then the rest of the week was 9am-9pm everyday! I was knackered! I think I’ve pretty much recovered now though.

In other news, I got my mobile phone account suspended on saturday morning for not paying my bill. The “bar-stewards” at vodafone didn’t even bother to ring me to tell me there’d been a problem claiming my direct debit from account, so I had a huge go at them. I then had to make several phone calls to them and my bank to try and fix, both telling me I need to speak to the other. In the end I used my initiative (because no-one at vodafone seems to have any) and told them to cancel the direct debit they’ve got set-up and start a new one. Bloody useless bunch of idiots!!! (As you can tell I’m not bitter)

Milky Bars Are On Me!!!

I went to collect my award today for my third year project only to find that the person who was meant to present it to me (some randomer from Phillips) wasn’t here. Instead I recieved a letter telling me this guy wasn’t here, but that my £300 would be forwarded to me soon. £300!!!! For a bloody third year project!! How awesome is that!!! Tonight I’m off to celebrate that and my new job with Rick & Laura & possibly a few others at Sankeys to see Krafty Kuts. Drop that one on your granny’s lap and sit on it!!!
On the downside I feel like someone’s avoiding me. Hmmm… Perhaps I’m just being mega-paranoid. But it sure feels that way!

I’m back!

I sincerely apologise for the severe lack of blogging recently, what with exams, going of to switzerland, organising parties and the like I haven’t really had time, but I’m back (for a shortwhile – I’m of to London on Sat for my new job!). Anyway, first up, I got my exam results. I passed everything! Phew!!

  • Distributed Op Sys – 62%
  • Network Security – 72%
  • Information Retrieval, Hypermedia and The Web (the one based on Elvis.com) – 73%
  • Third Year Project – 77%
  • Accounting & Law- 68%

Infact, I got a letter in the post saying my 3rd year project won the award for most innovative MEng project!! I get a prize & stuff!! To be honest, I’m one of 7 people who made it through to carry on with the Masters next year, so there wasn’t many projects to choose from, but still!!! If people wanna see my project (though it’s not all up i don’t think) it at http://www2.cs.man.ac.uk/~goldspm2/.

Nearly ready

In between my irregular blogging, and other stuff, I’ve been trying to complete my 14,000 report on project which is due in on wednesday morning. It’s pretty much all done now!!! Phew!!!I just wanted to share my joy with the world! Woohoo!!!
